The state of Querètaro is largely influenced by its previous Spanish colonial masters, the remains of the Spanish conquerors can still be seen in the form of its exotic and beautiful architecture. The capital city Querètaro, is Santiago de Queretaro, which is located at 220km to the north of Mexico city, it still reminds tourists and local residents of the battles and skirmishes between the Spaniards and the local Indian population.

The architecture of Querètaro, includes mansions, classic temples and palaces of the Spanish; each building and structure has an appeal that has turned this city into a tourist haven. The monuments are considered to be a special treat for visitors thronging on the streets. The most lucrative sights are mentioned below:

Maths Museum:

This extravagant museum was built during the late 17th and 18th centuries for the establishment of the College of Theology and Philosophy. Later through the years it experienced being the Civil College, the University of Queretaro, the Central Preparatory School, the Language School, the Veterinary and the Zoo technique Schools; and finally the Philosophy and Letters School. Being the Maths Museum is the final stage of its development.



The Aqueduct:

The Aqueduct is undoubtedly the most magnificent structure of the 18th century. It was primarily created to draw in fresh water for the inhabitants; the Aqueduct due to its architecture and design still fulfills its purpose inspite of it being constructed several hundred years ago. It consists of 74 arches which reach up to a maximum height of 23 meters. It measures upto 1280 meters in length.

The Temple of Santa Clara:

This temple was primarily built to provide for a place of personal worship for the daughter of the founder of Santiago de Queretaro, from the outside this temple looks ordinary and simple but the eyes of every visitor open widely, once inside. The most impressive part of the temple is the alter, which is made of a combination of gold and stone; the carvings and unique designs are a must sight to see for every visitor of this city.

The Republic Theater:

Finally completed in the 19th century, the Republic Theater was initially given the title of "Great Iturbide Theatre". The theater has been of historic importance for the whole of Mexico; a large number of famous international artists have performed here. The Mexican national anthem was also read here, plus the famous trial and execution of Emperor Maximiliano de Habsburgo and his generals; Miguel Miramon and Tomas Mejia took place in this same theater. Nowadays, this theater holds cultural events and traditional ceremonies.


El Cerrito:

If you're a fan of the Egyptian Pyramids, then this archaeological site is must see for you. This site is located at a distance of hardly 7km form the city. The structure has been derived from the Egyptian Pyramids. The local inhabitants of Querètaro call it the "Piramide de El Pueblito" (meaning the Pyramid of the Little Town). The site contains sculptures and statues that date back to thousands of years.
